Summer Scholarship Opportunities


ALTRUSA CLUB NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
The Altrusa Club of Portland, a national organization of professional businesswomen, established this scholarship in 1993 to aid non-traditional students to further their education.

JANET B. ARNOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2006 by Richard D. Arnold as a memorial to his wife and her life as an educator. Mrs. Arnold was a teacher in the Jay School Corporation for over 30 years. The scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates who are entering their junior, senior, or graduate year of college and majoring in elementary education.

CLIFFORD AND NANCY BALL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2016 by the will of Nancy Ball. This scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates, with first preference to students enrolled in a Masters program or non-medical Doctoral program. Second preference to students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of college.

DR. ARA C. AND GAY B. BADDERS MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1998 by Mrs. Badders in memory of her husband. The fund is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a degree in the medical field. First preference to students obtaining a doctoral medical degree.

RUTH WHIPPLE-BADDERS SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2007 by Patricia S. McKinley. This scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates who are entering either their junior or senior year of college and majoring in education.

ALWYN CARDER SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2004 by the Alwyn A. Carder estate. This scholarship is for students who are entering either their junior or senior year of college and majoring in architecture, history, or education.

JAMES AND IMOGEN COWAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2019 by the family of James and Imogen Cowan. This scholarship is for residents of Jay County who are entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of college and are pursuing education (including certifications and degrees) in the vocational arts.

MARSEAL T. DeWEERD, EDITH T. HORN, AND VIRGIE M. BRADY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2001 in honor of Marseal T. DeWeerd, Edith T. Horn, and Virgie M. Brady by the Marseal T. DeWeerd estate. This scholarship is for students who are entering their junior or senior year of college.

EAST CENTRAL OPPORTUNITIES, INC SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2012 by the Board of Trustees of The Portland Foundation. This scholarship is to aid students attending the John Jay Center for Learning.

SHIRLEY FRANCK PERSEVERANCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2021 by Liz Lawson to honor her wife, Shirley Franck. The fund is to provide scholarships to students who are residents of Jay County who are non-traditional and are pursuing a post-secondary degree. 

WELDON AND DOROTHY HAMMA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2017 by the will of Dorothy Hamma. The fund is to provide scholarships with preference given to non-traditional students pursuing post-secondary education (including certifications, degrees, and union journeyman cards) that are either Jay County High School graduates or have obtained their certification of a high school equivalency. The fund may also provide scholarships to Jay County High School Graduates pursuing a post-secondary degree in their junior or senior year of study.

LARRY AND MARIA HIATT ENDOWMENT FUND
Established in 2013 by Larry and Maria Hiatt. This fund is to provide scholarships to students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of college and pursuing a degree in Education. 

CARLA E. HORN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2022 by Carla's family. The fund is to provide scholarships to non-traditional students pursuing a degree in the medical field. First preference to students studying Nursing.

JOYCE A. HORN SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2014 by Joyce A. Horn. This scholarship is for college juniors and seniors majoring in Elementary Education. First preference will be given to students who attended Bloomfield Elementary School and who are studying at Ball State University.

JOHN JAY CENTER FOR LEARNING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2004 by the Board of Trustees of The Portland Foundation. This scholarship is to aid students attending the John Jay Center for Learning.

CHARLES & RUTH JOOS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2010 by the Ruth W. Joos estate. This scholarship is for students who are entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of college with preference given to sophomores.

DR. GLADE A. AND JOYCE H. McAFEE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2011 by Julie Forcum in memory of her parents. This scholarship is for Jay County residents who are enrolled in either a Doctoral Program in Optometry or a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Program.

LINUS F. AND MARGARET MESCHER SCHOLARSHIP TRUST
Established in 2018 by the will of Linus Mescher. The fund is to provide scholarships to Jay County residents pursuing a degree of higher education.

JAMES E. PETERSON ENTREPRENEURIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2014 by Jim's five children. The fund is to provide scholarships for Jay County students majoring in Entrepreneurship. 

MARTHA CATHARINE ROCKWELL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2016 by Levon Rockwell. This scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates, with preference to juniors or seniors majoring in a music-related degree and enrolled in a Christian College. Second preference, include the support of educational scholarships for deserving students who most closely satisfy the criteria.

FRED M. AND ELIZABETH L. (HUDSON) STULTZ SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2017 by Joan Saxton as a memorial to her parents. The fund is to provide scholarships to Jay County residents who are college juniors or seniors and are pursuing a degree in Agriculture or Veterinary Science.

ORLA L. AND RUTH E. THARP EDUCATIONAL FUND Established in 2013 by the Ruth Tharp Estate. This scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates,
with first preference to students enrolled in a Masters program or a non medical Doctoral program. Second preference to students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of college.

ELIZABETH STARBUCK SCHOLARSHIP II FUND
Established in 2012 by the will of Ms. Elizabeth Starbuck. This scholarship is for Jay County High School  graduates who are entering either their sophomore, junior or senior year of college.

HAYNES STARBUCK SCHOLARSHIP II FUND
Established in 2012 by the will of Ms. Elizabeth Starbuck. This scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates who are entering either their sophomore, junior or senior year of college.

ROBERT QUADROZZI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2010 by the family of Robert Quadrozzi. This scholarship is for Jay County residents who are enrolled in higher education classes at the John Jay Center for Learning.

RICHARD L. AND LORETTA E. (LARRY) ZEIGLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2017 by Cynthia Mendenhall and Marianne Horn as a memorial to their mother, a longtime educator. The fund is to provide scholarship to Jay County residents who are in their junior year or higher in college with first preference given to students pursuing a degree in education, agriculture or business.
